Wilder Landscapes / Case studies
# Wild Peak
Wild Peak (opens new window) is an ambitious rewilding initiative based in the Peak District that is working in close partnership with landowners, local communities and project leaders to inspire and implement a landscape-scale, nature-led approach to nature’s recovery, using nature-based solutions and rewilding principles, wherever possible.
In November 2019, regional stakeholders met to consider strategies for the transition to a wilder landscape, building on Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s ambitions to deliver more for wildlife and for people, ensuring 30% of the region is managed for wildlife by 2030.
Using seed funding from Rewilding Britain over the first three years, and navigating the covid pandemic, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust undertook extensive research to determine what ecological restoration would be possible in the area, including opportunity mapping, species feasibility studies and opportunities to develop a nature-based economy.
In November 2022, the Wild Peak Network launched, with monthly newsletters, workshops and meetings, helping the network to grow from 30 members covering 800 hectares in October 2022, to 62 land managers managing 1,350 hectares for nature by June 2023.
Wild Peak is in the process of fundraising for projects to deliver more for their members, and encourage other land managers and business owners to engage with a wilder landscape.
