Implement at least one pilot project in carbon reduction technology in traditional or listed buildings and use findings as exemplars for wider scale delivery.
Progress: Objective 1
Action CC.2 Carbon reduction technology
Progress commentary:
- 2023-2024
There are currently two candidate projects which are in the early exploratory phase and at least one should progress into 24/25.
Candidate project A – Barns at North Lees Hall
North Lees Hall Barn is a multi-phase barn with elements dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th century with Grade II listed building designation. The building incorporates the remains of four timber cruck frames dating to 1573-78. The building is of High Heritage Significance as a good example of a 17th century vernacular agricultural building which retains historic, archaeological and architectural interest derived from its age and integrity of historic fabric. The Barns, as part of the North Lees Estate, are managed by the National Park Authority and so if a change of use can be agreed then future carbon reduction technology can be proposed.

Candidate project B - Edale Mill
Edale Mill is a three storey gritstone mill with detached square chimney was built c.1793. It was closed as a mill in 1932 and was later used as a store by the water board, until the 1960s, when the buildings were converted into maisonettes in 1984. There are multiple stakeholders and land owners who would need to agree to move the project forward. However, it could be an excellent case study to showcase how efficiency measures including secondary glazing, attic insulation and renewable power sources can be installed sensitively in a listed building without harming the building's significance.
